Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is coming
From April 2026, many landlords will see a major change in how they report rental income to HMRC. Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax will replace the traditional annual Self-Assessment process for landlords, sole traders and the self-employed with qualifying income over £50,000. Lower thresholds will follow in April 2027 and April 2028.
Under MTD for Income Tax, those impacted will be required to:
- Keep digital records of income and expenses
- Submit quarterly updates to HMRC using approved MTD compatible software
- Complete an end of year Final Declaration, replacing the traditional Self-Assessment
tax return
For landlords with multiple properties, joint ownership arrangements or more complex
expenses, this represents a significant shift in both workload and approach. Choosing the right software - and setting it up correctly - will be critical to ensuring compliance.
